Bail Counties
A Quick Walk through the Pittsburgh Bail Bond System
Arraignment and Bail
The arraignment process works pretty much the same across the county as most states have adopted some form of English Common Law. A defendant is arraigned either by judge or magistrate and depending upon the circumstances, bail is either set, disregarded, or in extreme cases that involve probationary hearings, denied. Bail has gone up with the cost of living, making it unaffordable in many cases without the assistance of a bail bonds agency.
Bail Bonds Licensing
A Pittsburgh bail bonds agency must be licensed with the courts, as well as, have a blanket surety. Bail bonds agencies must have a financial support system, being either backed by an insurance agency or a bank, must go through background checks, training, and other demands by the court system before being licensed.
Payment and Monitoring
Pittsburgh bail bond agencies charge 10 to 15% of the bail prior to posting the bail bond. This means that if bail was set for $10K then the defendant or his family must post $1K in cash or collateral in order for the bail bondsman to create a bail bond that can be issued to the courts. When this happens, the bail bondsman posts the bail bond at the jail, picks up the defendant and returns them to a permanent fixed address agreed upon prior to issuance of a bond. The bail bondsman stays in constant contact with the defendant to ensure that 1) the commit no criminal acts while waiting trial, 2) they do not skip or jump bail, and 3) that they do no self-harm while awaiting trial.
Court Appearance
When an individual returns to court than the deposit is returned to the individual and the bail bondsman is able to repeal the bond. If the defendant does not appear in court, and there is not a verifiable emergency associated with the contempt then the bail bondsman either acts as a bounty hunter or solicits the assistance of one to track down the individual and return him to jail. The original fees are kept and additional fees associated with the capture of the fugitive are charged to the defendant and their family.
A Friend Where You Least Expect It
Many individuals who have used a bail bondsman have agreed that by the end of their association they found a reliable mentor. They know their way around the courts and are able to answer questions, provide advice, and offer compassion. Pittsburgh bail bondsmen know their business and they’ve seen it all. You won’t find any judgment from a bail bondsman, and most of the time you will find that you get more than you paid for.
