Bail Counties
Bail bond agents have an official security agreement with local court and jail officials. Within the agreement it basically states that the bail bond agent agrees to post an irrevocable "blanket" bond that will pay the court if any defendant for who the bond agent is responsible for does not appear at any of their scheduled court hearings or cases. When you are playing the part of the cosigner for a bail bond, the bail bond agent generally charges a fee of 10-15% of the total amount of the bail that is required to post. This fee is non-refundable, and it represents the bail bond agent's income for their services. In some states there are flat rates that are 15% of the bail amount, others have it set at 10%. There can also be a number of other "little" fee's that these bail bond companies charge. For instance, some bail bond companies will bill the defendant for phone calls, gas, mileage and anything else that has to do with the release of the defendant, etc.
For large bail bonds, some companies will require physical collateral. This can come in the form of a mortgage, car titles, physical cash, etc. As long as the defendant appears to all of their court cases when required by the judge until there is a conviction or dismissal, then your physical collateral you provided will be given back to you. If the defendant does not appear at a court case, then you forfeit that collateral to the bail bond company.
