What are bail bonds?
Bail bonds are basically a sum of money used as guarantee that the defendant (arrested person) will not flee while he is on bail. It also guarantees that the defendant will be present in the court whenever called.
What is the fee of the bail bondsman?
Each state has its own regulations regarding the fee you should pay to the bondsman. In Santa Fe County, the fee is 10% upfront. Some states also exercise 15% fee of the total amount of the bail. Although the fee is upfront, some bondsmen also offer installment options. This means that if you can’t pay the fee in one go, you can pay it in installments divided over 6-12 months. Also, the bondsmen at times require collateral to make sure they suffer minimum losses. Collateral however, is used for major crime scenes where the defendant is involved in a murder charge or something similar. The bigger the charge is the heftier will be the bail amount set by the court.
How to find a reliable bail bondsman?

Will the bondsman return the fee you paid?
Basically, the fees you pay to the bondsman are his profit. However, your collateral will be returned once the trial is over and the fees will be kept as the bondsman’s profit. Once the trial is over, the court will refund the bail amount and the 10% you have paid will go in the pocket of your bondsman for his services.
